Dingle, Ireland! A Center for Irish Music

To the little town of Dingle we go...driving ever so carefully, but thinking we’ve got the knack of it now.  Oh, I say “we.”  Yes, well, Steve is doing the actual driving.  I have the mapping app pulled up on iPad and as we go along, iPad announces the next round about and I repeat it as we get nearer and nearer to navigating the turn, the exit, the arrival...all of it.  And then I add, “Left, left, left...keep left!”  It helped me.  I hope it helped the driver!

We stop at Inch Beach to have a look at a local surfing spot.  Not tempted to get in the water...AT ALL!

We arrive in the town of Dingle by noon and find Harbour Nights B&B.  They are not open to new guests until 3:00 p.m. and the door is locked!  So, 3:00 p.m. it will be!  Wonderful!  We have time to walk around and get acquainted with this sweet town and see what’s up...and down...the streets.

We choose our coffee shop by the sign outside the door.  As you can see, it was a great choice!

Hum, this pub advertises live music tonight...and, what’s that?  Is that a ukulele?

And, look here...a music shop!  We must go in the music shop!

As it happens, they are hosting a concert tonight of traditional music.  We are in!

We have a great dinner next door, The Anchor Down Restaurant.  And then stop back at the shop to inquire if they will be open tomorrow.  Steve has decided he must have an Irish Drum...a Bodhran to be exact.  No, they are not open tomorrow (Sunday) BUT, they are happy to show us a drum right now (even though they are starting to prepare for the concert) and give us a mini drum lesson.  Ok then!

I get a drum stick of my own (tipper, beater, stick) of my own because I want to be sure I will get to play too!
You are supposed to hold the stick, or the tipper, or the beater like a pen.  Hum.  Don’t have it yet.

Here’s our new friend, Michael, the owner of the shop. His son is a Rick Steves (Edmonds,Washington tour and travel guru) tour guide and has his group at the concert tonight.

No, we did not buy the accordion!

Another surprise of the trip...didn’t know we were going home with a drum!

The concert featured two local musicians and a 10 year old girl who danced for us.

Intermission brings another surprise.  Everyone is served an Irish coffee....yes, decaf!  Did I mention the whip cream?

We think this beautiful young girl is headed for a dance competition.  We think she’s a winner!

Our first day in Dingle, and what a day!
