Off to Joshua Tree and Beyond....

White Pelican on the Salton Sea
We are off to Joshua Tree National Park...but first, the road winds past the northern part of the Salton Sea.  This is one of the richest birding areas in the entire U.S. and we have to take a quick look.  Today we find white pelicans and great blue herons available for a photo shoot.

GBH....or, Great Blue Heron...looking, great!
Our goal is to arrive at Joshua Tree before noon as the campsites this time of year are claimed early and often.  We find a dandy site in Cottonwood campsite.  $7.50 per night....because, we're OLD.  Yes, that Golden Age Pass is the real deal...$10 to purchase the pass and it "expires when you do" according to the ranger who sold Steve his, seven years ago.  Half price works for us!

Happy Hour....again....

Yip, yip, yippee....i-ey-i-Ohhhhh!
Our new coyote mascot helps out with happy hour and ukulele howling.  Sparky isn't sure about this new addition!

Jumping cholla cactus

Hello, Joshua tree!
It's been seven years since we've had a chance to visit this wonderful national park.  We spend a whole day exploring the park by Jeep and wish we could figure out a good way to visit national parks with our dogs.  No dogs allowed on any trail or anywhere more than 6 feet from the pavement.  All for good reason as far as not harassing wildlife, but hard to get out and do a walkabout when the weather is hot.

Steve gets some great photos

After just two days we are off for Santa Cruz....a trip over to I-5, and a stop at Harris Ranch exit for an overnight and a great meal.  I am checking Facebook on my phone as we are getting near and what do I see?  Mary and Rick (more beach buddies) have made a post...from...Harris Ranch!  Great to see them again and visit.

Steve, Rick and Mary....plus pooches!
Dinner is great and a stop in the store proves fun as we find...a ukulele egg slicer!  Who could live without one?
The perfect...um...thing.
Come morning we are off to Santa Cruz to meet up with more beach friends, Bonnie and James.  We will sell them a paddle board and stay overnight.  Bonnie recommends Yank's RV Resort....and we reserve a space.

This turns out to be a great spot...if you are a little south of Santa Cruz on 101 and need a spot...this is it!  The sites are large and well kept and level.  There is a clean and fair priced laundry, a beautiful, warm pool and hot tub, an outdoor fireplace and lounge area, and a dog park is marked on the map.  I am happy we can do laundry and continue to clean up....and as I wistfully look at the dogs...thinking...I so wish there was a "dog laundry"....Steve says: "Hey!  The map says there's a dog wash here!"  And so there is!

Outdoor common fireplace

Great green grass at the dog park

Wonderful swimming pool

Sparky at the controls of the dog wash....he says Skipper is first!
Surprise!  They are both first!
One night here and we use about everything they have to offer!  We have a good meet up with Bonnie and James and now we are one SUP board lighter.

To get around San Francisco, without the challenging traffic...we head back to "the 5" and spend the night at Rolling Hills Casino at Corning, CA.  The RV park there is great, the wifi fine, and when you get a casino card, it is loaded with $20 free credit.  Now, we have never actually played the machines, so, how about a first time for everything?

We read the directions carefully....
Nan chooses this machine....

Steve chooses this machine....and...
We put in our cards...and become observers of the machines whirring away, listen to the bells, and yes, whistles...and somehow...in the end...Steve "wins" $28.98 and Nan "wins" $24.52.  Paid for dinner...and a little more.  Then we laugh our way back to the rig.

On Tuesday we take hwy 299 out of Redding and head over to Crescent City, CA.  It's good to be back on the coast.

Somewhere on the CA pacific coast
Finally!  A grey whale for Nan!

Looks like Crescent City to me!

Dogs run....RUN!

Plenty of room on this beach!

What's Crescent City without a look (and listen) at the sea lions?
If you look carefully, you'll see this little guy (or gal) has a yellow tag on the left fore flipper.  I can barely make out the number when I enlarge the photo.  Probably not good enough for a report...the only very young sealion on the float....with about 50 adults.

Tomorrow we cross the border...and we will be in Oregon.  Closer and closer to home we crawl!

Moving Home Slowly....Surprises Along the Way

Ahhh....my first Stone IPA since...???

Happy hour ....sorta lonely!
We arrive in San Diego on March 20th.  The KOA is full of families and travelers, and it is the right place for us to spend two nights.  First, we need groceries....including beer of course.  Beer = IPA....very different from Corona or Pacifico! The shock of the big grocery store fruit and vegetable section once again takes my breath away.  Gasp...

Who will buy all this???

How many tomatoes do you want today?
Shopping takes longer than usual as, I want (and need) only three tomatoes.  But there are probably hundreds (thousands?) of tomatoes to choose from....oh my.  And which kind?  And organic or not organic?  My mind whirls.

After experiencing the farm worker's strike and knowing of their plight...berries are hard to consider...especially if I can't figure out where (which company) the berries originated.  I buy no berries.  I do buy tomatoes....and six instead of three.  Why?

Once the groceries, we so carefully eliminate in order to cross the border, (I'm convinced that because I said I had 12 small limes ....the legal to cross with ones...we were held in secondary inspection for 30 minutes...and no the limes were not "the reason" but we never got the reason)...were resupplied, along with the beer that was long gone...it was on to other important things.

Next, the dog park with all the fun agility challenges.  Sparky was a whiz at all of them....as long as there is a treat in store, this boy is motivated!

Sparky goes for it!
Then, it's off to the Creed SUP Board shop on Saturday morning to take a few boards out for a trial paddle.  They loan us both an 11' and a 12' board and we throw them on the Jeep and head for Chula Vista Marina.

11' board
Sparky helps with a trial spin through marina
Soon we are the owners of two 12' boards!  Now to follow through on the plan to get to Santa Cruz and sell one of the 10' boards to Bonnie and James.  (Coyote beach buddies)  We have these two shipped home.

Next stop is Jamul, CA....only a 30 minute trip from San Diego, to visit Air Force buddy Arnie and wife Marie.  They tell us they have the perfect spot for an RV to park....oh...they are SO right!

We park in the driveway, by the house, in front of the pond and vineyard!

How is this group approaching their 7th decade birthdays?

We have a wonderful visit with Arnie, Marie and granddaughter Gabby.  Thinking back to the Air Force days (46 years ago)....who would ever imagine that there would be a reconnection, here at this beautiful home in Jamul...with our RV (???) parked outside?

We see (yes, on Facebook), that our beach buddies Ramie and Tim have stopped at Oasis Palms RV Park...in Thermal, CA.  It's only a hop, skip and a drive from Jamul...AND it's right on the way to Joshua Tree NP.  We're off!

We arrive at Oasis Palms in time for Happy Hour Coyote beach style....on the pool deck!  And it's perfect weather for a swim first.  The rv sites are in an old orange tree orchard surrounding a small lake and fountain.  The pool and hot tub are only steps away from our site.  Best of all, we find two more Coyote campers here too!  A mini reunion...

Flowers everywhere!

Cool little lake

Parking in the orange grove
One day turns into three nights enjoying this great spot with beach buddies.  Since there is no morning exercise on paddle boards here...or kayaks...or Wayne's walk hike...Tim decides we will have a water aerobics class....11:30 sharp...at the pool!  He brings along music and a demo video on the iPad!  What?????  Seriously?  See for yourself!

Instructor Tim ready with the video and music!
We are grateful that with all this jumping around and bouncing off the pool bottom, there are no sting rays to dodge!  No sea jellies either!

Mark, Tim and Steve...bounce to the music!

Wouldn't you know?  Serious exercise class....turns into...well, boys will be boys....

Spy Jelle

Spy back Steve

And girls will be girls!  Deb sets a great example of daily R&R....and we all join in.

Deb

Ramie

This is a great pool and hot tub spot...and dog friendly...so the dogs hang out in the fenced area with us....our personal lifeguards!

Lifeguard Ringo

As the world works, there happen to be three birthdays to celebrate here with our beach buds.  We cannot let the grand Coyote birthday celebration tradition lapse....just because we are not actually on the beach!  First comes Mark....and yes, I produce the birthday crown and necklace!  We have a pot luck dinner which is, as always, great!

Happy 65th Mark!

Yum!  Again!

Ramie's birthday will be Thursday, and we will be leaving....but...how about a ukulele lesson today?!

Ukulele = Smiles!!
Ramie is "a natural" we think....she plays her first song today...all the way through...with chords learned...today!  I'm brought back to a sign I noticed on the front of an RV....

                                                           "TODAY IS SOMEDAY!"

We look forward to more ukes joining us on the beach next year....they will bring along their peeps!

Yep....it's just like this!....

Steve and his Blackbird

We miss both Ramie's birthday on Thursday and Jelle's birthday on Friday as we feel we must leave for Joshua Tree NP before the weekend crowds totally fill up the campsites and...gulp...we might not get in.  We know they all carried on in grand Coyote fashion! (and passed the crown around!)

Saying goodbye....yes, once AGAIN, to our buddies....it's on the road again...headed for Joshua Tree NP.  It's a short hour and 1/2 drive to the park and we plan to arrive before noon in order to grab a good campsite....or...at least...a campsite.

A Respite at LA Cetto Winery

What is left of our caravan makes way through Ensenada and on to the wine country south of the Tecate border crossing.  The road is beautiful.  We arrive at LA Cetto Winery before closing and they advise us...it's fine to spend the night in the parking area.  Oh, the wine tasting and store closes in an hour...make haste!

Beautiful road in the wine country of northern Baja

We pull in and circle the rigs again!  This time for wine...not waiting.

But which one????

Our wine educator....

Joe and Kathy

Pedro and Janet have a taste

Steve has a taste....to the lasts drop!

Dori is a good listener....
Soon we've had our tastes....and purchases secured, we return to our "campsite" for a happy hour....waiting for the sunset hour and a hike up to the bull ring overlooking the winery, vineyard and valley.

Happy campers

Sunset seekers hike up the road

Flowers line the road along the way....pictures say more than words.  We arrive at the top of the road and climb the stairs to the top of the bull ring arena.  The sun is setting across the valley.  The light....spectacular!  The contrasts of the day are almost too much.  We leave San Quintin in the midst of the farm worker's strike and arrive late in the afternoon to be surrounded by peace and beauty.

Valley evening....good night Baja....

In the morning....whoa....it's time to say goodbye....again!  We are off to Tecate...in no particular rush...but today is border crossing day.  We keep the radio contact one last time...as there is a particular "cop" in Tecate that is now famous for harassing travelers headed to or from the border.  He pulls them over, for no appearent violation...and suggests they can avoid going to court by just paying him...oh...$300 USD to make the "problem" go away.  We have never been bothered, but...why not stay together...just in case?

We travel through the border town of Tecate in a group of four, two trailers in tow, two RV's with tow cars....Joe and Kathy are first, we are second, then Jerri and Norm and finally, Pedro and Janet.  They will get visas at the border, and will take the longest to get through customs, so they will go last.

We are two stop signs away from the turn to the border...we are all stopping at EVERY "Alto" sign, counting to "10" and moving on.  BUT...as Joe and Kathy pull away from the second to the last stop sign...a police truck from up the hill, pulls out, tucks in behind them and turns on the lights.  I radio to Kathy..."hey...hate to tell you this, but you have flashing light polica, right on your rear.  We are right behind you and will stop with you."

They pull over as they turn up to the border line...the cop in back of them, and we come along side...the policeman motions for us to go on...I open my window and say, "Oh...no...we can't go on...we are TOGETHER.  We must stay with our friends."  We pull right ahead.  Norm and Jerri pull in behind us.  Now there are three rigs all stopped...but unfortunately, not blocking any roadway.  Then along comes Pedro...who stops in back of the police truck.  We all get out and go toward the policeman who is talking to Joe from his truck.  He is speed talking Spanish....and Pedro (our Spanish speaker extraordinary) gets out and walks over.  He says to the cop..."Are you the cop everyone is talking about in Tecate?"  The cop tells him to "lower his voice."  Pedro says, "With all respect...ARE you the cop everyone talks about??"  Then he tells pedro he is going to give us ALL tickets...for parking in the wrong place...and then there is a moment...and then Pedro says: "That's it, I need your name and your police ID number...."  And suddenly the cop "gets a call" and turns on his flashers and has to leave...we are all to leave too.  Now.  Ok then!

Nothing like an exciting exit across the border.  In another 30 minutes we are through customs, across the border, and on to life...but back in our own country.  For now...it's a relief to realize it all takes place in English...and I have somewhat of an understanding of what's going on...

It was a memorable trip north this year...
