Madeira....Flower Parade, Visit to “the” Luthier and Ride the Sleds!

After all, it IS the Madeira Flower Festival and once a year Flower Parade!  After all, we have been invited to march in the parade representing ...The Ukulele!  We are given festival t-shirts and instructed to wear blue jeans.  Real denim JEANS.  OK!  But as you may notice...we definitely stand apart from the rest of the entries.  The day is hot, the music is LOUD, the crowd is huge...this is clearly a “big deal.”  And yet, here we are, 22 ukulele players and some support team husband and wives...and we are ....doing this!

I know....I know....we are not visible yet.  In fact, we are at almost the END of the two hour parade....right after women in awesome costumes with special dance steps...and right before the float that broke down and had to be pushed the parade route...both playing very very loud music which meant we are basically air strumming and shouting “Aloha!”  With enthusiasm and SMILES!

Wait for it....

....but first admire the butterflies!

Ahhh, the float with the Disney music!

Yay!  It’s The Ukuleles!  What do they have to do with flowers you ask?  No idea!  But here we are.  Invited, but definitely a curiosity!

They supply lovely yellow flower leis.

We supply the smiles and Aloha!

Lots of waving helps pass the hour plus of “marching, mouthing and air strumming...”

This group hug / cheer / got us going and probably kept us going....until....we reach our end...which was by the beer house!

In the morning we visit the luthier shop of Carlos Jorge....the only luthier around still crafting the machete and braghina!

Our leader, Lynette, has ordered a custom instrument from Carlos last year and today it is ready to go home with her!
Happy girl!  Happy luthier!

Family business....as this is Carlos’ son, working in the shop.

He has built a tiny machete...but he says, this one is NOT for sale!  It is for ME!

Did I mention the “sleds”?  As in the basket sleds that slide you down the streets to the harbor from way, way, WAY up high?  Oh, and the brakes are the sled guys...and their special shoes with tire tread on the bottom!  Yikes!  If you’re only on Maderia once, and it is now, then now is the time!

Yep...it was a “trip”....downhill all the way...no need for these guys to get up and go to a gym!
