Chocolate, Beer, Waffles and Fries.....

All of that at once?  It must be Belgium!  Oh MY!

Today we are headed to the town of Bruges!  Truthfully, I've never heard of it before.  When I think back on this day, it is truly to be treasured.  Wow!

Bruges is about an hour's drive from the cruise port of Zeebrugee.  It is advertised as an old, old city with a lovely canal transiting around it.  We learn it is not only rich with history and art, but full of excellent foods like chocolate, beer and delicious waffles.  Now I understand the meaning of "Belgium waffles!"  All those toppings for one waffle?

I choose pure chocolate!  YUM!

We listen to the guide as we navigate this incredible town.  Well, town?  Village?  City?  There are beautiful churches, one home to a Michaelangelo sculpture of Madona and child, palace like buildings, several huge squares, narrow winding cobbled streets, horse drawn wagons, lovely canals.....so much to see now and so much to imagine about days gone by.

Oh the chocolates!

Oh the "fries!"  Be careful not to insult the locals by calling these French froes!  They will tell you true, real, delicious fries, were originated in Belgium!  NOT France!  Had to do the research to see if they were truly the best!?

Ahh, but what is the dipping choice?  Ummm, how about curry ketchup?  Why not?  What could be a better excuse for a lunch if fries....topped off by a chocolate waffle?

Well, we found the Michaelangelo....she's in the middle.

The. We lit a few candles for health and well being of family and friends....

We checked out the famous wall of beers brewed in Belgium and the underground beer pipes leading out of the city to waiting trucks.  We ran out of time to sit and enjoy a beer.  How did that happen?

For a place we knew so little about, it leaves a lasting memory.  Proof that food creates strong connections to place and time!?
