OH, Maui and Molokai!

Aloha San Juan Islands...we're off for Hawai'i, ukuleles on our backs!

Once again we look forward to a wonderful experience at Uke Ohana on Molokai, but...first a stop on Maui to take "The Road to Hana!"

This is our first experience renting a car using a kiosk and a "virtual agent."  An agent that is hard to hear, hard to figure out just how you actually show them your license and reservation and all in all, frustrating.  However, getting the keys and driving away felt like a BIG accomplishment.

We purchase a map that includes a CD audio tour and begin winding our way to Hana, and to our two night studio rental cabin.

In a few hours we are slowly making our way twisting and turning along the road, stopping at one waterfall after another, each one different as water throws itself over cliffs, tumbles down over ledges and rocks and sends spray up to the sky...or into your face!

Then there are the Seven Sacred Pools, not seven and appearently not Sacred.  But, beautiful.  This day there is no access (except by camera and eye) as the rain has been so heavy that the pools are contaminated by runoff from agriculture fields and cattle.

The "No Swimming" signs warn of sharks awaiting in the ocean where the water from the pools enter the sea.  Hum.  Kind of wild out there today anyway.

There is an opportunity to hike up to the top of one of the highest waterfalls.  We make it a little over half way in the heat and humidity.

Time to cool off in our little outside shower and bathtub at the studio.  Then a nice dinner at the only restaurant in Hana.  (FYI The food trucks close at 4:00 p.m.!)

The next day we finish the Road to Hana...which turns into the Road to Lahaina and a two night stay at The Plantation Inn.  Great spot on the planet!

Two nights we enjoy great dinners at The Lahaina Yacht Club...why not?  (If you find good food, great view and good value...two is better than one!)

 How about henna tattoos?

Soon enough it's time for the "Road to Molokai and Uke Ohana at Pu'u O Hoku Ranch....

Aloha Maui!

West Coast Ukulele Retreat - Asilomar 2016

We arrive at Asolimar a day early...you know...just in case the Coast Starlight lives up to it's other name: the Coast StarLate.  Lucky for us, we wind up arriving right on time and have a whole day before ukulele activity begins.  Hum.  What to do in Monterey...?

First we explore the fabulous grounds at Asolimar State Beach Conference Grounds.

Our accommodations are a bit more spacious than our Amtrak roomette!  A king size bed and a lovely fireplace greet us as we open the door.  We discover that each night a fire is set in the fireplace just for us!

It's a fabulous day for a walk around the grounds....

Wait!  What's this?  There are mountain lions around?  After reading the information, Nan practices how to deal with a big cat, should you come across one on the path...or outside your door?!

Got it!

Not a mountain lion...

On Wednesday morning we are off to the Monterey Bay Aquarium for a few wonderful hours of seeing what and who lives beneath the surface of the sea.  Oh, and a few penguins too!!!

Penguin introductions...

This is the "Hello" bow...also known as "Hola"...of course!  All information and signage in the aquarium is in English and Spanish.

Giant jellies!

Slinky iridescent jellies!

Then there is the long walk home....

We begin the West Coast Ukulele Retreat for real with tonight's dinner and introduction of this year's staff.

The classes run for the next three days.  There are 7 instructors and about 100 ukulele students.

We really love Victoria Vox's song writing class.

Kevin Carroll from Austin, Texas!

Jim D'Ville, Gerald Ross, Daniel Ward, Heidi Swedberg, Dave Eagan and Elaine de Mann....

A lot of walking between classes and meals and performances...

Great food...and a fun flash mob to Sweet Caroline.  (Turns out there are members of the Kennedy family present for another retreat and in the dining hall that night)

Moments of reflection

Dancing!

Fireside time

Hop back in time to the 50's!?

A great time, full of music, new friendships, smiles, laughter, learning, singing and playing.
All of this in a beautiful place and space.
